Flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Direct travel should be the first option for a premium family itinerary. Emirates states that it serves Beijing and Shanghai twice daily and Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou daily from Dubai. Schedules and operating days still need to be checked for the exact travel dates. From Abu Dhabi, available nonstop or one-stop options should be compared by total journey time, arrival hour, baggage allowance and the quality of the connection—not only by headline fare.

For this route, an open-jaw ticket is usually more efficient: arrive in Beijing and depart from Shanghai. It avoids an unnecessary return journey and protects almost a full day of holiday time.

The recommended 12-day China itinerary

Days 1–3: Beijing

Use the arrival day for a private transfer and a calm evening near the hotel. On the first full day, explore Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City with a private guide who can control the pace and explain the history without overwhelming younger travellers. Reserve another day for the Great Wall, choosing a section that matches the family’s mobility and interest level.

A central hotel around Wangfujing, Dongcheng or a well-connected part of Chaoyang keeps transfers manageable. For a premium stay, the hotel should be selected for recent guest reviews, room size, breakfast quality and easy vehicle access—not the brand name alone.

Days 4–5: Xi’an

Travel to Xi’an by high-speed train or domestic flight. The train can be part of the experience, while a flight may be preferable when schedules save meaningful time. Xi’an’s essential visit is the Terracotta Army, best done with a private vehicle and guide. Keep the second day lighter with the Ancient City Wall, the Muslim Quarter and a well-planned food experience.

Families should avoid a late arrival followed by an early Terracotta Army departure. A central hotel inside or close to the city wall gives the itinerary more flexibility.

Days 6–8: Chengdu

Chengdu provides a useful change of rhythm. Visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding early, when the animals are generally more active and the site is less crowded. Add a relaxed city afternoon, a teahouse experience and, depending on the family, either a Sichuan cooking activity or a carefully selected day trip.

Three nights are worthwhile. Two nights often turn the panda visit into another rushed transfer day.

Days 9–12: Shanghai

Finish in Shanghai with a hotel in or near the Bund, People’s Square, Jing’an or another central district suited to the family’s plans. Balance the classic skyline and waterfront with the Former French Concession, a private food walk or a day in a quieter water town.

Families adding Shanghai Disneyland should reserve a full day and keep the following morning flexible. Departing from Shanghai completes the open-jaw route efficiently.

High-speed rail or domestic flights?

China’s rail network makes several city combinations practical, but “train is always better” is not a useful rule. Compare door-to-door time.

High-speed rail is often attractive when:

• the stations are central and easy to reach;

• luggage can be handled comfortably.

A domestic flight may be better when:
