Should I fly to Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo for my Lapland stay?
Choose the airport around your actual overnight base, not the word “Lapland” alone. Finavia identifies Rovaniemi Airport as the gateway to Rovaniemi, Kittilä as a gateway to Levi and Ylläs, and Ivalo as a gateway to Saariselkä and Lake Inari. These are different arrival points; a flight to one does not complete the journey to every resort.
Kafu planning recommendation: confirm the hotel or cabin address before comparing flights, then include the transfer to that address in the comparison. Check the transfer’s operating time against your arrival and return flights. Do not replace the arrival airport just because its air fare is lower without comparing the extra road journey and its cost.

Can I board a train to Rovaniemi directly at Helsinki Airport?
Not the long-distance train itself. Finavia explains that only commuter trains serve the airport directly; you change at a suitable station for the long-distance service. VR describes the P train to Tikkurila followed by a connection towards Rovaniemi. Use the interchange and departure time shown in the journey booked for your date, rather than assuming every northbound train leaves from the airport.
Finavia says selecting Helsinki Airport as the departure station in a VR booking can include the commuter and long-distance legs together. A booking that starts at Helsinki Central is a different starting point. Kafu’s planning check is to allow for flight arrival procedures, collecting luggage, walking to the airport station and changing platforms; a quoted train-running time is not the complete flight-to-train connection time.

Does a night-train ticket include a private cabin and a separate bed for my child?
Check what was actually booked. VR sells sleeper cabins for your own party rather than individual berths shared with strangers. Cabin type still matters: its double-deck upstairs cabins have an en-suite shower and toilet, while standard downstairs cabins use facilities along the corridor. Some downstairs cabins can be connected. Ask for the cabin category and bed arrangement, not simply “night train included”.
VR says children aged 0–10 can travel free when sharing a berth with another passenger, but the operator must be informed. This is not a promise of a separate child’s bed or free travel across the rest of the holiday. Keep the days realistic: leave the arrival day flexible, allow time for the Helsinki–Lapland connection and avoid combining several long outdoor activities without warm breaks. Ask each activity provider about child ages, clothing, transfer times and weather alternatives before committing.
