UAE Flight Cancellations: Rebooking, Refunds & What to Do (2026)

5 min read

Reviewed 19 September 2026. Airline disruption policies change, and passenger rights can depend on the route, operating airline, ticket issuer and applicable law. This guide is practical travel-planning information, not a promise of compensation or legal advice.

Flight cancelled from the UAE? Do these five things first

1. Check the operating airline’s official flight status and the cancellation or schedule-change notice before leaving for the airport. Booking screens, airport boards and email alerts can update at different times.

2. Identify who issued the ticket. If an airline issued it directly, use that airline’s manage-booking or disruption channel. If a travel agency or another airline issued it, the issuer may need to process the exchange or refund.

3. Check the full itinerary. If a connection is on the same booking, ask how all sectors will be protected. Separate tickets can have different consequences.

4. Compare the disruption options actually offered for your ticket: rebooking, rerouting, refund or airline credit. Do not assume a voluntary-cancellation fare table describes an airline-cancelled flight.

5. Save the cancellation notice, booking reference, ticket number, replacement itinerary, chat/email records and reasonable expense receipts until the trip and refund are fully closed.

What the main UAE airlines currently publish

Emirates

Emirates advises affected passengers to check official flight status and notifications before travelling to the airport. Its current disruption information says cancelled bookings can be rebooked; direct-booking customers can use the airline refund process, while travel-agent bookings should be handled through the agent. Paid extras may require separate refund requests. Emirates flight status and disruption FAQ · Emirates cancellation notice

Etihad Airways

Etihad says passengers are notified by email when a flight is rescheduled or cancelled. For cancellations more than three days ahead, alternative-flight options can appear in Manage My Trip; closer cancellations are actively assisted by the airline. Travel-agent customers should contact the issuing agency for ticket changes and refund handling. Etihad cancellation and delay FAQ · Etihad Manage My Trip

flydubai

flydubai’s disruption policy says that when it cancels a flight, qualifying passengers can rebook without additional cost to another flydubai flight within 30 days before or after the original date, or take the next available scheduled flight to the same destination. Its disruption page describes eligible refunds for passengers who choose not to travel as a flydubai voucher. Agency or partner-airline tickets should be handled by the issuer. flydubai disruptions and cancellations

Air Arabia

Air Arabia’s Conditions of Carriage distinguish airline disruption from a passenger choosing to cancel. If Air Arabia cancels a flight, fails to operate it reasonably according to schedule, misses the ticketed destination or causes a protected connection to be missed, its published conditions provide choices including carriage at the earliest opportunity, rerouting within a reasonable period or an involuntary refund, subject to the conditions and applicable law. Airline cancellation is not the same as you cancelling the ticket

A passenger-initiated cancellation can be restricted by fare family, timing, no-show rules and cancellation fees. An airline-initiated cancellation or major disruption can trigger different remedies. Read the cancellation notice you actually received before selecting a voluntary cancellation option in an app.

What if you booked through Kafu or another travel agency?

Start with the ticket issuer. The airline controls the operation, but the agency that issued the ticket can be the party authorised to exchange or refund it. Send the cancellation notice and say whether you want to preserve the trip, change dates, reroute or stop travelling.

Do not independently cancel hotels, transfers or activities until you know their own deadlines and supplier terms. A cancelled flight does not automatically cancel every other service. For Kafu bookings, the quotation, supplier conditions and Kafu Terms of Service govern how linked non-air services are handled.

What happens to connecting flights?

Ask whether every sector is on one ticket and one booking reference. On a through booking, operating or ticketing carriers may protect onward sectors when a schedule change breaks the connection. On separate tickets, the second carrier may apply its own fare or no-show rules even when the first flight caused the problem.

Before choosing a replacement, compare total journey time, terminals, baggage through-check and connection protection. See Kafu’s direct-flight versus connection guide for why the cheapest alternative is not always the safest itinerary.

Should you still go to the airport?

If you received a confirmed cancellation notice, recheck the operating airline’s official status and instructions before travelling to the airport. Do not rely only on search results, social posts or third-party flight trackers. For a delay rather than a cancellation, follow the airline’s current check-in or revised reporting instructions.

How should you evaluate a refund?

Confirm exactly what is being refunded: unused ticket sectors, taxes, baggage, paid seats, upgrades and other extras may be processed differently. Ask which payment method or credit form will be used and whether accepting a voucher changes another available option. Refund processing time also varies by airline, issuer and payment method.

Do UAE passengers always receive cash compensation?

No single compensation formula applies to every flight departing the UAE. Rights can depend on where the journey starts or ends, the operating airline, the cause of disruption and the law that applies to that itinerary. Some routes may fall under additional regimes such as EU or UK passenger-rights rules. Use the notice and law applicable to your exact journey.

Keep a disruption file

Save the original e-ticket, booking reference, cancellation email or SMS, screenshots of official flight status, replacement booking, supplier correspondence, reasonable expense receipts and refund reference. For a family booking, keep every passenger’s ticket number because reissues and refunds can be processed separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can a travel agent rebook a cancelled airline ticket?

Often yes when the agency issued the ticket. Emirates, Etihad and flydubai all direct agency-issued customers back to the issuing agency for at least some changes or refund handling.

Should I cancel the booking myself after the airline cancels?

Not before checking the disruption options. A voluntary cancellation can use different fare rules from an airline-initiated cancellation.

Does a cancelled flight automatically cancel my hotel?

No. Hotels, transfers, tours and other services have separate supplier terms and deadlines. Coordinate the whole trip before cancelling linked services.

Where should I check a UAE flight before departure?

Use the operating airline’s official flight-status page and your booking notifications. Kafu’s Dubai flight-times guide is useful for normal journey duration, but a scheduled flight time is not proof that a flight is operating today.

Kafu planning rule

Protect the trip before chasing the cheapest replacement. Confirm the operating airline, ticket issuer, complete itinerary, baggage, hotel deadlines and refund method in one written plan. If Kafu issued or manages your travel services, send the cancellation notice before making separate supplier changes.
