A classic first route is Tokyo 4 nights, Kyoto 3 and Osaka 2. Do not assume a national rail pass is automatically good value; compare the journeys you will actually take.
Choose South Korea for
A compact Seoul base with palaces, markets and cafes.
Shopping, skincare, K-pop and screen-culture interests.
Trips of five to seven nights.
Adding Busan, Gyeongju or Jeju as one clear extension.
Fewer hotel changes.
A first route could be Seoul 5 nights plus Busan 3. For less time, stay in Seoul and use one or two day trips.
Seasons and crowds
Spring blossoms and autumn colour are popular in both countries, but timing varies by region and year. Japan’s Golden Week, Obon and New Year create domestic pressure; Korea also has major holidays and festival peaks. Summer is hot and humid, while winter ranges from crisp city weather to snow.
Food and dietary planning
Japan excels in regional specialities, sushi, ramen and kaiseki; Korea in barbecue, stews, markets and cafes. Vegetarian, halal and allergy-sensitive travellers should research specific restaurants and carry translated dietary cards because broths and ingredients may be unclear.
Transport and cost
Japan’s rail makes multi-city travel practical; Seoul metro and Korea’s KTX make a compact route easy. Avoid moving hotels merely to cover more places. Neither country is automatically cheaper: flights, season, room size and hotel location dominate the total.
Common questions
Best for seven nights? Korea with Seoul plus one extension; Japan with Tokyo and Kyoto only. Best for families? Both; inspect room size, bedding and pace. Easiest independently? Korea is geographically simpler; Japan has deeper multi-city infrastructure but more decisions.

Should I combine Japan and South Korea in a seven-night holiday?
Kafu planning recommendation: usually choose one country for a first seven-night trip. Combining both adds another airport journey, check-in and hotel move, reducing the time available in each place. It can suit travellers who deliberately want two city stays, but compare usable sightseeing days rather than country counts. Ask for a day-by-day plan showing hotel nights, airport transfers and the flight between the countries. Do not count a transfer day as a full sightseeing day or assume baggage is identical on every flight.

Is a national rail pass automatically better value than separate tickets?
No. Compare the journeys you will actually make during the pass validity period. The JAPAN RAIL PASS requires an additional pass-holder ticket bought before boarding Nozomi or Mizuho services; those trains are not simply included at no extra cost. KORAIL PASS excludes metropolitan railway services, so it is not a substitute for Seoul metro fares. Ask for a comparison with separate tickets for your chosen routes, including any supplements and seat reservations, before adding a pass to the quotation.

Can I bring a large suitcase on the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka train route?
Measure length plus width plus height before booking. For a normal reserved-seat booking on the Tokaido Shinkansen, JR Central requires a seat with an oversized-baggage area for bags over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in total. Bags over 250 cm cannot be carried as ordinary luggage. The unreserved deck-storage option for bags up to 160 cm does not remove the reservation requirement for oversized bags. Confirm the correct seat type for your exact train rather than assuming that any ticket includes space behind the last row.

Does “pork-free” or “Muslim-friendly” mean halal-certified in Japan and Korea?
No. Korea Tourism Organization distinguishes accredited halal certification, self-certification by Muslim restaurant owners, Muslim-friendly venues with some halal dishes, and pork-free venues. Its pork-free category does not mean a halal menu; alcohol may be sold in pork-free and Muslim-friendly venues. Check the specific classification and meal, not just the label on a map.
In Japan, the national tourism organisation notes that dishes can contain cooking sake or mirin and that halal-friendly restaurants may not have separate halal-only kitchens.
